The #1 Retirement Necessity (By Tanner Horstmeyer)

What if I told you that the most important thing in your retirement wasn’t a mutual fund, a booming stock, a collection of bonds or even that 401k that you worked so hard building up all those years? Sure, those are all very important and they have their place. But to explain what I’m talking about, I want you to picture this with me…

You set out for a drive from California all the way to South Carolina. You don’t have access to GPS and you’re trying to figure out how to get there on the fly as you see the big green road signs fly past you on the interstate. You don’t know where you’re going to eat, no clue where you’re going to sleep, where the gas stations are, and chances are, you’ll likely end up somewhere completely different than your intended destination.

This leads to the #1 Retirement Necessity… YOU HAVE TO HAVE A PLAN. Not only does not having a plan potentially make your retirement journey way costlier than desired but it can also cause you to be in a scenario where you end up in a completely different and undesired destination than where you intended when you started your retirement journey.

We actually see this all the time. People come to our office with their portfolio and to some degree are just winging it with no plan in place. If that’s you, you’re not alone. Less than 25% of Americans have a written retirement plan! Meaning, most are essentially driving across the country with no plan. The difference is, the consequences of not having a plan are less severe with the road trip analogy. You may have to sleep in your car one night or accidentally take a wrong turn which adds a few hours to the trip. The consequences of not having a written financial plan in your retirement are much more severe: heavy tax burdens, estate planning problems, not maximizing your social security benefit and potentially even going back to work because of you need for income.

When looking at the 5 biggest regrets retirees have about their retirement, the number 1 regret is that they didn’t plan sooner or failed to have a plan at all!

But that’s where we can help. There Is hope!

With the volatility in our economy and the uncertainty of the future, we urge you to build a financial plan, one in writing. If you already have an advisor, consider a 2nd opinion and see if there are any holes or missing pieces in your current plan.

We invite you to a complimentary consultation where you can tell us your story, and see how we can add value to you and your specific situation.

You don’t have to live with the regrets of not planning sooner. You can move forward and start planning today!
